About This Exam

The Mathematics subtest is one of four subtests of the FTCE General Knowledge Test (082). It assesses your ability to solve mathematical problems at approximately the high school level, covering arithmetic, algebra, geometry, measurement, and statistics. An on-screen four-function calculator and a mathematics reference sheet are provided during the real exam. This subtest tests your own math skills, not your ability to teach mathematics.

Questions35 multiple choice
Time Limit100 minutes
Passing Score200 (scaled)
Exam Cost$130 (for all four GK subtests together)

What's Covered

For the official exam description, see the official FTCE General Knowledge Test page.

Study Tips

  1. A four-function calculator is provided on the real exam, so you do not need to memorize complex calculations. Focus on knowing when and how to set up problems correctly.
  2. Geometry and measurement questions are common. Memorize the formulas for area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles, and circles, and the volume of rectangular prisms and cylinders.
  3. For word problems, identify what is being asked before you start calculating. Many errors come from solving for the wrong quantity.
  4. Statistics questions frequently test whether you understand the difference between mean, median, and mode — and when each is the most appropriate measure. Know that the mean is affected by outliers while the median is not.
  5. Be careful with questions about misleading graphs. The most common trick is a vertical axis that does not start at zero, which exaggerates differences between bars or data points.

How to Register

Register at fl.nesinc.com. The full General Knowledge Test costs $130. You can take all four subtests together or schedule them separately. A scaled score of 200 is required to pass each subtest. Military personnel, veterans, and their spouses may be eligible for certification exam fee waivers through the Florida Department of Education.

Sample Practice Questions

1. A shirt is on sale for 30% off its regular price of $45. What is the sale price of the shirt?
  • A) $13.50
  • B) $15.00
  • C) $31.50
  • D) $33.00
View Answer & Explanation

Correct Answer:
C) $31.50

Explanation:
30% of $45 = 0.30 x 45 = $13.50 discount. Sale price = $45 - $13.50 = $31.50.

2. Simplify. (18 - 6) / (2 + 1) + (4 x 3)
  • A) 4
  • B) 8
  • C) 16
  • D) 28
View Answer & Explanation

Correct Answer:
C) 16

Explanation:
Following the order of operations: (18 - 6) = 12; (2 + 1) = 3; 12 / 3 = 4; (4 x 3) = 12; 4 + 12 = 16.

3. A student earns the following quiz grades: 78, 84, 91, 67, and 85. If the student is allowed to drop the lowest grade, what is the mean of the remaining grades?
  • A) 81.0
  • B) 84.5
  • C) 85.0
  • D) 86.0
View Answer & Explanation

Correct Answer:
B) 84.5

Explanation:
Drop the lowest grade (67). Remaining grades: 78, 84, 91, 85. Mean = (78 + 84 + 91 + 85) / 4 = 338 / 4 = 84.5.

4. Which of the following is equivalent to 3/8?
  • A) 0.250
  • B) 0.375
  • C) 0.380
  • D) 0.833
View Answer & Explanation

Correct Answer:
B) 0.375

Explanation:
3/8 = 3 divided by 8 = 0.375. You can verify: 0.375 x 8 = 3.

5. A bakery uses 2 3/4 cups of flour for each batch of bread. How many cups of flour are needed for 6 batches?
  • A) 12 3/4
  • B) 14 1/2
  • C) 16 1/2
  • D) 18 3/4
View Answer & Explanation

Correct Answer:
C) 16 1/2

Explanation:
2 3/4 = 11/4. For 6 batches: 11/4 x 6 = 66/4 = 16 2/4 = 16 1/2 cups.
